When we just want to forget…
Traumatic experiences can affect the whole person and bleed into all aspects of our lives.
Sometimes, we can experience flashbacks, where the trauma feels like it’s happening all over again in the present. We can have nightmares. We can wake up the next day feeling like we are still in the trauma.
Trauma can be caused by anything from abuse to a car accident. Your trauma does not have to compare to anyone else’s trauma, but the effects can take hold of your entire being.
Finding a solution
If there is something that you don’t want to deal with, then EMDR can help you finally get rid of it permanently.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy uses a small machine called a theratapper. When the machine is on, it gently sends out a light tapping feel to either one of the palms of your hands.
While your brain is activated by the memory of the trauma, the bilateral signal produced by the theratapper is sent to your brain as well. This allows you to reprocess and move the trauma to a part of your brain that no longer gets so activated by the memory of the trauma.
It is one modality that we use during a normal therapy session to help you cope with your trauma.
What EMDR is not
EMDR is not hypnosis. It is not painful. While engaged in the activity, you are in full control. If you feel uncomfortable, you can stop at any time.
