How Does Therapy Work?

Finding a therapist

You decide therapy may be an option for you. What is the first step?

You go on the Internet and type in “therapist” and your city. A bunch of web pages will pop up.

Which one do you choose? How do you find the right person for you?

You land on one that looks like it might be a good fit for you. You call or send an email.

You get me!

First thing you notice is that this therapist is friendly and responsive. Next, I will ask how you found me and what made you want to reach out.

As we talk, some basic background information will be obtained from you. You will learn a little bit more about me, and then, if we are a good fit, we can schedule an appointment.

Gathering information

Once you come in to see me for the first session, we will review the intake form you completed.

This form covers all your basic background information and allows me to understand where you are emotionally. It helps me form a foundation, so I know where to start to give you the best therapy.

How does the process work?

During the first session, we do some talking (I promise I won’t bite). I make sure you are as comfortable as possible. You are in full control; therefore, we never talk about what you don’t want to get into at that point.

You don’t have to tell me your entire life story. I work for you with a collaborative spirit. We discuss some goals you have for treatment and how to move forward.

At the end of the session, I make an appointment with you for next time, and off you go out into the world.

If you don’t feel like it’s a good fit after the first session, I’m happy to refer you to another provider.

Remember, you are in charge of your mental health. You decide what works for you and what does not. You are under no obligation to stay in therapy with me.

But let’s get to that first conversation!
